Bendigo employers added 85 new positions in network security and local systems support in the first week of July, a direct response to the Telstra outage that disrupted triple-zero calls and regional services.
The outage exposed gaps in national connectivity that regional firms can no longer ignore, pushing companies to build internal capacity rather than rely on distant providers. This shift matters now because Bendigo businesses lost an estimated $2.4 million in productivity during the 9 July event, according to City of Greater Bendigo records.
Local programs respond on Mitchell Street and View Street
Recruitment at the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE on View Street has reported a 40 percent rise in enquiries for short courses in cloud infrastructure since the outage. At the same time, the City of Greater Bendigo council opened 12 new contractor roles based at its Mitchell Street offices to maintain local fibre links and emergency backups. Both sites sit within walking distance of Hargreaves Mall, where two cafes already advertise for staff who can troubleshoot point-of-sale systems without external support.
Local data shows average salaries for these roles reached $92,000 as of 1 July, up from $81,500 twelve months earlier. A Bendigo and Adelaide Bank workforce survey released last month found 62 percent of regional firms now list on-site digital skills as essential, compared with 41 percent in the same survey in 2025.
Next steps for job seekers
Workers should check the City of Greater Bendigo employment portal for listings updated every Friday and contact the TAFE careers office on View Street before the next intake closes on 31 July. Those steps will position applicants for the next round of infrastructure contracts expected in August.
