Weekend Getaways from Bendigo: Castlemaine, Daylesford and the Goldfields Region

Bendigo's central Victoria position makes it an excellent base for exploring the broader Goldfields and central Victorian region, with several outstanding day trip and weekend destinations within 30-90 minutes. Castlemaine, 37 km south, is a creative hub with a significant arts community, independent shops and the Castlemaine State Festival, one of Victoria's most respected arts festivals. The Castlemaine Art Museum and its collection of Australian historic art are nationally significant. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, 80 km south, form Victoria's premier mineral springs and day-spa destination, with the Hepburn Spa complex, numerous smaller bathhouses and a sophisticated food and wine scene centred on the main street of Daylesford. The Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is 2 hours west and offers dramatic sandstone ranges, wildflowers in spring and Aboriginal cultural sites at Brambuk. Murray River towns including Echuca (90 min north) have paddle steamer history, water sports and river red gum landscapes. Heathcote, 50 km south, is a growing cool-climate wine region producing Shiraz of national acclaim. The Wombat State Forest between Bendigo and Daylesford provides mountain bike and walking access.
