Bendigo Broadband Upgrades Bring Faster Access but Prompt Questions on Equity and Data Use

More than 46,000 premises in Bendigo can now access faster NBN speeds after the Accelerate Great upgrade program finished, with over 24,000 households and businesses eligible to move to higher tiers.

The changes arrive as the City of Greater Bendigo advances its Smarter Bendigo strategy through the Smart City Bendigo Alliance, which lists connectivity among its seven pathways alongside governance and measurement. Local organisations such as Bendigo Telco have already rolled out the separate 100 Gig Bendigo network to draw digital businesses and narrow gaps in service quality.

Fixed wireless and satellite gains reach specific areas

Fixed wireless customers in the Bendigo electorate stand to gain download speeds up to 100 Mbps, with as many as 85 percent able to reach 250 Mbps under the $480 million national investment. Roughly 3,300 premises are set for Sky Muster Plus Premium satellite service delivering unmetered, uncapped speeds to 100 Mbps. Mobile coverage is expanding through one new tower and 4G-to-5G upgrades at 13 existing sites serving Golden Square, Flora Hill, Kangaroo Flat and nearby zones.

Free public WiFi at more than 140 outdoor spots in central Bendigo supplies up to 5 GB daily without login requirements. The city-wide LoRaWAN network operated as the Bendigo Things Network already covers over 80 percent of the area and supports applications such as Coliban Water smart stations that track usage in parks.

Questions surface on reach and safeguards

While these projects expand capacity, they also surface qualitative concerns about whether upgrades reach every neighbourhood evenly and how data collected through public WiFi and IoT sensors will be protected. Expanded networks could widen divides if eligibility rules or device costs leave some households behind, and increased connectivity brings routine considerations around privacy when usage data flows through shared systems.

La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus hosts the Deloitte Australia Digital Operations Centre, projected to create 200 jobs, and the Bendigo Tech School runs STEAM programs tied to medical technology and advanced manufacturing. These efforts sit alongside the upgrades and illustrate how connectivity underpins workforce development, yet they also highlight the need to pair infrastructure spending with training so residents can use the new speeds.
