The Lar Birpa Athletics Complex in Bendigo hosts school sporting carnivals and training for more than 50 schools and 20,000 students each year.
High school students in Years 7-12 can apply for the select-entry Athlete Development Program. Track and Field Athletics forms one stream alongside AFL, Basketball and Football. The program gives selected students structured support while they remain at their local school.
Four clubs operate in the Bendigo area: Bendigo Harriers, Eaglehawk, South Bendigo and Bendigo University Athletics Club. These clubs support student athletes who want to train and compete beyond school hours. Athletics Bendigo runs the AVSL competition from October to March for athletes aged 12 and up, with events including 100m, hurdles and high jump.
Bendigo Senior Secondary College track and field athletes regularly advance to the Loddon Mallee Region finals and the School Sport Victoria State Athletics Finals. Recent medal winners from the college have placed in the 400m, javelin and triple jump.
Students interested in the Athlete Development Program should check eligibility through their school. Those seeking club training can contact any of the four listed clubs. The summer AVSL season offers the main competition window for athletes aged 12 and older. Participation begins with school carnivals at the Lar Birpa Athletics Complex or direct registration with a local club.
