A record 487 finishers crossed the line at Bendigo’s Neangar Park parkrun on Saturday, organisers confirmed, as the city’s running community turned out in force on a crisp winter morning. The previous mark of 453, set in March, fell by 34 participants as hundreds lined the 5 km gravel-and-grass loop along Retreat Road and the banks of Bendigo Creek.
The surge in numbers comes amid a broader national spike in recreational running. Australia’s parkrun network reported a 12 percent year-on-year increase in June registrations, according to the organisation’s monthly participation data. Bendigo’s event, one of the fastest-growing in regional Victoria, has now topped 400 finishers for eight consecutive Saturdays.
While much of the sporting world focused on Spain’s 2-1 win over France in the World Cup semi-final overnight, ending Les Bleus’ bid for a third consecutive final appearance, Bendigo runners had their own reasons to celebrate. Spain will face the winner of Argentina-Uruguay in Sunday’s decider, but here in central Victoria the conversation was about personal bests and winter training miles.
“The energy at Neangar was incredible,” said a volunteer timekeeper who declined to be named. “We had families, first-timers, and a crew from the Bendigo University Athletics Club pacing each other through the finish funnel.”
The local running calendar also included the weekly Bendigo Runners Club time trial on Tuesday evening at the Tom Flood Sports Centre on Napier Street. Forty-three athletes competed over the 5 km and 10 km loops, with the women’s 5 km winner clocking 18:47 and the men’s 10 km champion finishing in 34:21, both season bests for those runners, the club reported on its social media channels.
The spike in participation mirrors trends seen nationally. A 2025 survey by Sport Australia found that 2.3 million Australians now run at least once a week, with regional centres like Bendigo showing above-average growth. Local running retailer On Your Marks, located on Mitchell Street, told customers this month that entry-level shoe sales had risen 18 percent year-on-year.
“People are looking for low-cost, social ways to stay fit,” said a sales assistant who spoke on background, noting that the shop’s Saturday morning crowd now arrives an hour earlier than it did two years ago.
Bendigo City Council has responded by adding two new water stations along the Bendigo Creek Trail and resurfacing the 2.5 km section between Weeroona Avenue and Mundy Street. The upgrades, funded through the council’s Healthy Active Bendigo program, are part of a $120,000 investment in active-transport infrastructure announced in the 2025-26 budget.
Correction note: This article initially stated that Spain had reached a third consecutive final. The current Spain team had not played in the 2022 or 2018 finals. The error was removed before publication.
