The Bendigo Striders running club has made headlines this week after drawing a record 350 participants to the opening race of the 2026 Bendigo City Sprint Series held Sunday on High Street and the surrounding Rosalind Park precinct.
The significance of this rise in participation comes as endurance and community sports regain momentum following a decade marked by disruptions tied to health restrictions and changing fitness trends. With local interest in running at an all-time high, the Striders are embodying Bendigo’s growing reputation as a hub for vibrant sports culture and active lifestyles.
Bendigo, long known for its varied terrain and welcoming community programs, has seen a surge in grassroots athletics. The City Sprint Series, coordinated by Bendigo Athletics Club and backed by the City of Greater Bendigo's Sport and Recreation department, has been a focal point for this revival. Starting at Rosalind Park and stretching through McCrae Street, the series invites competitors of all ages and abilities, encouraging a social yet competitive environment.
The Bendigo Striders, one of the city’s oldest running groups founded in 1978, have been instrumental in sustaining interest and participation. Their training programs utilize the Lake Weeroona track and the trail networks around Quarry Hill Nature Conservation Reserve, providing varied conditioning environments. The club’s commitment to fostering new talent and creating accessible programs has broadened its membership to over 200 runners this year.
According to data released by the Bendigo Community Sport Office, registrations for running and walking events in the region increased by 22% in the past 12 months, with the City Sprint Series accounting for 45% of active participation across minor competitions. Entry fees for each race in the series are set at a modest $15, allowing affordability for families and casual athletes. The next event, scheduled for August 9, is already close to reaching capacity with 310 entries confirmed.
This upsurge coincides with greater investment in public fitness infrastructure, including the recent upgrade to the Bendigo Stadium’s fitness zones and expanded lighting on the Lake Weeroona walking trails, enhancing evening training opportunities.
Organisers have also partnered with local businesses to offer scholarships and sponsorships to promising athletes, reflecting a collective endeavour to elevate Bendigo’s competitive edge nationally and support community health.
For runners looking to join the movement, the Bendigo Striders welcome new members at all skill levels. Training sessions meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 pm from the Sandhurst Track on Holden Street, with beginner clinics starting monthly. The next Bendigo City Sprint event will take place on August 9, with online registration closing August 2. Further details are available on the City of Greater Bendigo’s official sport portal.
