Assaults, a weekend pursuit and a growing shoplifting problem: Bendigo's crime week in full

Bendigo police logged 14 assault-related incidents between Saturday 27 June and Thursday 2 July, with the bulk of them concentrated along View Street and the Hargreaves Street Mall precinct in the late-night hours between 11 pm and 2 am. Three people were taken into custody over the weekend alone. The figures put this week among the busiest for the Bendigo Police Service Area since the Easter long weekend in April.

The timing matters. Victoria Police's Central Murray Division has been quietly monitoring whether Bendigo's numbers track what criminologists are seeing in larger regional centres, a post-winter-solstice uptick in street violence that historically runs through mid-July. That pattern, combined with cost-of-living pressures squeezing households and a documented cooling in the property market reducing financial stability for renters, has put frontline services on alert across central Victoria.

Pursuit, shoplifting and a Strathdale incident

The week's most serious episode came Tuesday night when officers from the Bendigo Highway Patrol unit pursued a stolen Holden Commodore from the Kangaroo Flat Bunnings carpark north along the Calder Highway before the driver abandoned the vehicle near the Strathdale roundabout on Napier Street and fled on foot. A 19-year-old Eaglehawk man was arrested within 400 metres. He was remanded to appear at Bendigo Magistrates Court, which sits at 65 Pall Mall, on 18 July facing charges including theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct endangering persons.

Shoplifting is becoming its own headline. Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit detectives say retail theft reports from the Hargreaves Mall precinct, covering Target, Kmart and a cluster of independent retailers, rose 22 per cent in the June quarter compared with the same period in 2025. The Bendigo Business Council raised the issue formally with the Bendigo Police Service Area command at its June monthly meeting, calling for a dedicated retail liaison officer position similar to the one trialled in Ballarat's Bridge Street Mall in 2024.

Bendigo Health's emergency department recorded 31 assault-related presentations in the seven days to Wednesday, according to figures provided to The Daily Bendigo by a hospital spokesperson. That compares with a weekly average of 22 over the previous three months. The ED on Lucan Street is currently operating its winter surge plan, which brought on four additional triage nurses in June under a $1.2 million state government allocation tied to the hospital's capital expansion program.

What the Ceasefire model could mean locally

Discussion about violence-reduction strategies has sharpened this week after analysis of Glasgow's Violence Reduction Unit, which cut homicide rates by more than 60 per cent over 15 years, prompted Victorian health officials to examine whether a similar public-health approach could be adapted for regional cities. Bendigo is one of four centres, alongside Geelong, Ballarat and Shepparton, that community health organisation Bendigo Community Health Services has flagged in preliminary talks with the Department of Justice and Community Safety as potential pilot sites. The Bendigo program, if funded, would be anchored through the Kangaroo Flat Community Health Centre on Jardine Street.

La Trobe University's Bendigo campus on Edwards Road is already involved at the research end. Its criminal justice and social work departments have been engaged by Victoria Police's regional crime prevention unit to map social vulnerability hotspots across postcodes 3550 and 3551, work that feeds directly into any future evidence base for a pilot application.

For residents, police are urging the usual practical steps heading into the July school holiday period: lock vehicles even in driveways, report suspicious activity to the Bendigo police station on Hargreaves Street by calling 131 444, and use the See Something Say Something portal at police.vic.gov.au for non-urgent matters. The Neighbourhood Watch group covering the Strathdale-Flora Hill corridor meets again on 15 July and is open to new members. Investigators are still seeking dashcam footage from the Tuesday night pursuit on the Calder Highway and are asking anyone who was travelling northbound between 9 pm and 10 pm to check their recordings.
