Bendigo's View Street neighbourhood evolves with expanded cafe culture and evening events

Bendigo's View Street neighbourhood added four new cafes and two evening pop-up venues between March and June this year, turning a daytime retail strip into a mixed-use stretch that stays active after dark.

The change arrives as more Bendigo households choose local outings over weekend drives to Melbourne, with fuel prices and family schedules cited as main reasons. City of Greater Bendigo data shows a 19 percent rise in foot traffic counts along View Street between 5 pm and 9 pm compared with the same period in 2024.

Two named anchors anchor the shift. The Bendigo Art Gallery extended its Thursday night openings to include a courtyard bar run by local winery Passing Clouds, while the adjacent Ulumbarra Theatre now hosts a monthly music series that spills into View Street's new outdoor seating. Both sites sit within 200 metres of the tram terminus at the corner of View and Pall Mall.

Winter trading patterns

Traders report average spend per customer climbing from $18 to $27 since the new venues opened. The View Street Traders Association recorded 38 applications for outdoor dining permits this winter, up from 22 last year. A pop-up wine bar operated by the Bendigo Winegrowers Association runs every Friday until 10 pm on the former car park behind the library.

Prices reflect the local focus. A single-origin pour-over at the newest cafe, Foundry Lane, costs $5.50, while a shared cheese plate from the gallery bar runs $28. Both figures sit below comparable Melbourne venues but above pre-2023 Bendigo averages.
