Bendigo's Arts Venues Attract Year-Round Crowds Despite Gallery Closure

Bendigo Art Gallery will partner with the Discovery Science & Technology Centre to stage an exhibition from March to November 2026 even as the gallery itself shuts for a $45 million renovation beginning November 2025.

The city earned recognition as a UNESCO Creative City and Region of Gastronomy in 2019, a designation that underpins ongoing investment in performance spaces and public art programs across central Bendigo.

Performance spaces anchor the local calendar

Ulumbarra Theatre opened in 2015 inside the former Sandhurst gaol and seats nearly 1,000 patrons for year-round productions. The Capital Theatre, a National Trust-listed Victorian-era Masonic Hall, also runs a continuous program of theatre and music events. Both venues sit within easy walking distance of the View Street Arts Precinct, where murals and installations remain on permanent display.

Opera Australia's production of Don Giovanni is scheduled at Ulumbarra Theatre for 1 August 2026, while Sir Stephen Hough performs there on 29 October 2026. The Eat.Drink.Art. program places original works by 40 artists inside local businesses until 3 August 2026, keeping foot traffic on View Street during the redevelopment phase.

Festivals and institutions maintain steady attendance

The Bendigo Easter Festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year and remains the city's largest single event. The Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival has run every November since 2011, and the Bendigo Writers Festival has operated since 2012. Visitors can also tour the Golden Dragon Museum's Chinese heritage collection or drive to Bendigo Pottery on the town outskirts for demonstrations.
