Bendigo’s jam-packed calendar: what’s on and why it matters now

Bendigo’s community events calendar is filling up fast this July, with organisers reporting strong interest in everything from weekend markets to live music gigs. The city’s major venues, including the Capital Theatre and the Bendigo Art Gallery, have lined up a slate of performances and exhibitions aimed at drawing locals and visitors alike.

The flurry of activity comes as many small businesses in the CBD and surrounds look to bounce back after a quieter-than-usual winter. Local cafe owners and stallholders say the events are providing a much-needed boost to foot traffic, especially on weekends.

Markets, music and more

This Saturday, the Bendigo Community Farmers’ Market will run from 8am to 1pm at the usual spot near the Charing Cross roundabout. Organisers say more than 40 stalls will offer fresh produce, baked goods and handmade crafts. The market operates on the third Saturday of every month, with entry free.

Over at the Bendigo Town Hall, the Bendigo Live Music Series continues on Friday night with a set from local folk band The Stringybark Trio. Doors open at 7pm, and tickets are $25 at the door or $20 if booked online through the council’s website. The series runs every Friday through to August 28, with a different act each week.

For families, the Bendigo Library on Hargreaves Street is hosting a school-holiday program of storytelling and craft sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm. The sessions are free but spaces are limited, bookings are recommended via the library’s online portal.

Why now matters

The winter events push comes after a period when many local hospitality and retail operators reported lower-than-average sales through June. Several traders in the Market Place arcade told the Bendigo Advertiser they were hoping the July calendar would draw shoppers and diners back into the city centre.

Bendigo’s tourism board, Visit Bendigo, has also been promoting the events through its social media channels and a dedicated ‘What’s On’ page on its website. A spokesperson said the organisation was “encouraged by the range of free and low-cost activities on offer” and was working with local organisers to help spread the word.

For those planning a night out, the Bendigo RSL on High Street has its weekly trivia night on Thursdays from 7pm, with a $5 entry fee per person and prizes for the top three teams. The RSL also runs a $12 roast dinner special on Wednesdays, which has been popular with seniors and families.

On the sporting front, the Bendigo Braves netball and basketball teams have home games at the Bendigo Stadium on Wattle Street this weekend. Saturday’s netball clash tips off at 4pm, followed by basketball at 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for concessions.

Looking further ahead, the Bendigo Art Gallery is preparing for its winter exhibition opening on August 1, featuring works from regional and national artists. Details of the exhibition program and ticketing are expected to be released later this month. The gallery is currently open daily from 10am to 5pm, with free entry to its permanent collection.
