Bendigo's nightlife heats up as locals and visitors seek new social spots

Bendigo's nightlife is seeing a quiet shift. On any given Friday night, the queue outside a Mitchell Street wine bar snakes past the door by 8 pm. Inside, every table is taken.

Locals and tourists alike are chasing new reasons to stay out past dark. The city's social scene, long anchored by a handful of pubs and the occasional live-music gig, is starting to feel different.

New venues, old favourites

Take the rooftop bar at the newly revamped Bendigo Hotel on View Street. It opened last spring and has been packed ever since. Manager Leah Thompson told the Bendigo Advertiser in May that Friday and Saturday bookings are often full a week in advance.

Down the road, The Dispensary on Pall Mall has extended its kitchen hours to 11 pm on weekends, responding to a demand for late-night dining that's not just pub grub. The menu now includes share plates and a raw bar.

Over in the Golden Square area, the family-run La Piazza on High Street started hosting a weekly jazz night in April. Owner Marco Rossi said foot traffic has doubled on those evenings.

What's driving the change

The shift isn't just about new venues. Bendigo's population has grown by roughly 8% since the 2021 census, according to the City of Greater Bendigo's latest community profile data. That means more people looking for places to go after work and on weekends.

Tourism is also a factor. Visit Victoria records show overnight stays in Bendigo increased by 12% in the 2025-26 financial year compared to the previous year. A portion of those visitors end up at the city's restaurants and bars.

The council's night-time economy advisory group, formed in early 2025, has been meeting quarterly to identify barriers to a thriving after-dark scene. One early suggestion: later public transport on weekends. The group is expected to release its first report in October.

Practical tips for a night out

For anyone looking to plan a weekend in Bendigo, most venues are walkable from the train station. The bulk of late-night action sits within a six-block radius of the Pall Mall and Mitchell Street intersection.

Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday evenings, especially at the newer spots. Many venues post their weekend hours on social media by Thursday afternoon.

Parking can be tight after 6 pm near the theatre precinct on View Street, but the council's multi-level car park on Edward Street offers free parking after 7 pm.

The scene is still growing. For now, the best advice is to show up early, bring a group, and expect a wait for a table.
