Bendigo families start the Victorian winter school holidays on Monday with a full slate of activities running through the next fortnight.

July temperatures in central Victoria often dip below 10 degrees, pushing households toward a mix of indoor workshops and sheltered outdoor spots that keep children moving without long drives.

Gallery and museum sessions

The Bendigo Art Gallery on View Street launches a daily drop-in drawing studio from 10am to 3pm aimed at ages five to twelve, using works from the current Australian landscape show as prompts. Staff provide paper and pencils at no extra charge beyond normal entry. Two blocks away on Bridge Street, the Golden Dragon Museum runs a 45-minute paper-lantern craft each afternoon at 2pm, limited to twenty children per session and tied to its permanent Chinese heritage displays.

Both venues sit within a short walk of the Bendigo tram terminus, letting families combine visits with a loop ride on the vintage fleet that stops at Rosalind Park.

Park and trail options

At Rosalind Park, the playground near the conservatory remains open daily, with the adjacent creek path offering a flat 800-metre loop suitable for scooters. Further out, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens on Napier Street added a new native-bird spotting sheet last month that rangers hand out at the visitor centre from 9am.

Entry to all three sites stays free, though the art gallery charges $15 for adults and $8 for children over five when the drawing studio is not running. Last July the gallery recorded 4,200 child visitors across the holiday period, according to its annual report.
