Bendigo residents and visitors have a packed schedule of community events throughout July and August, with at least 25 activities organised across the city’s diverse neighbourhoods. The updated community events calendar, released by the City of Greater Bendigo on July 10, highlights a range of local markets, cultural festivals, music nights, and educational workshops designed to bolster social connection and support local businesses during winter.
Winter in Bendigo can be a quiet time for social activities, but local organisers are determined to keep the momentum going. The recent release of Bendigo's annual community events calendar coincides with a push from the council to revive downtown foot traffic following slower months earlier this year. With statewide COVID-19 restrictions largely lifted, these events provide an opportunity for reconnecting residents and tourists while helping local vendors recover from an unpredictable economic period. Council spokesperson Laura Barrett emphasised that the calendar also supports the city’s long-term cultural strategy to increase community participation and inclusiveness.
Among the upcoming highlights, the Bendigo Farmers Market continues every third Sunday of the month at Violet Street Market Precinct, attracting hundreds seeking fresh local produce from 8am to 1pm. The Bendigo Art Gallery on View Street is also hosting its late-night music sessions every Friday evening during July, featuring regional live bands and offering gallery entry at a discounted price of $10. In addition, the Golden Square Neighbourhood House is running a series of affordable cooking workshops aimed at families and seniors starting July 20, with registration available online or in person.
These events not only showcase Bendigo’s thriving arts and food scenes but also encourage community engagement at different neighbourhood levels. Event organisers report rising attendance numbers, especially for those scheduled outdoors or in well-ventilated spaces, which aligns with ongoing preferences for safe socialising.
Data from the City of Greater Bendigo indicates that since the calendar was first digitized in 2023, online engagement with the community events page has grown by an average of 18% each year. This trend underscores increased local interest and reliance on a centralized source for event information, which now aggregates over 40 monthly listings citywide.
For many of these gatherings, ticket prices range between free entry to $25 for specialised workshops or gallery events. The council recommends early booking, particularly for smaller community spaces like the Golden Square Neighbourhood House, which has a seating capacity of 45 and often fills quickly during popular sessions.
To take full advantage of the community calendar, residents should visit the official Bendigo City Council website or subscribe to the monthly e-newsletter, which offers timely updates and exclusive offers from event partners. Parking remains convenient near key venues-free public parking is available at the Bendigo Library carpark on Hargreaves Street, and additional metered options are found around the central business district.
Community groups and individuals interested in hosting events can still submit their listings for consideration through the council’s online platform, aiding in further enriching Bendigo’s diverse social landscape. With winter’s chill settling in, these warm, engaging events offer something for everyone seeking connection, culture, and creativity right here in Bendigo.
