By the end of 2026, the Australian government plans to invest $1.67 billion in cybersecurity initiatives, with a significant portion of this funding earmarked for research and development in major tech hubs like Bendigo.
This investment is timely, given the growing concern about cybersecurity and digital safety in the community. As more people and businesses move online, the risk of cyber attacks and data breaches is increasing, making it essential to develop new products and technologies to stay ahead of these threats. The City of Greater Bendigo has already recognised the importance of this issue, with the establishment of the Bendigo Tech School and the La Trobe University's Research Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence, both of which are working on cybersecurity-related projects.
In Bendigo, several organisations are working on the frontline of cybersecurity, including the Bendigo-based company, SecureWorx, which provides cybersecurity services to businesses and government agencies. The company has partnered with the Bendigo Innovation Centre, located on Lyttleton Terrace, to deliver training and education programs in cybersecurity. Meanwhile, the La Trobe University's Bendigo campus, situated on Edwards Road, is home to a number of research projects focused on developing new cybersecurity technologies, including a project to create a more secure online payment system.
According to data from the Australian Cyber Security Centre, in the 2020-21 financial year, there were over 67,500 reported cybercrimes in Australia, resulting in losses of more than $33 million. In response to this growing threat, the City of Greater Bendigo has allocated $150,000 in its 2026-27 budget to support local cybersecurity initiatives, including the establishment of a cybersecurity hub at the Bendigo Co-working Space on Williamson Street. This hub will provide a central location for cybersecurity professionals and businesses to collaborate and develop new products and services.
As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, it's essential for individuals and businesses to stay informed about the latest developments and products. In practical terms, this means being aware of the latest cybersecurity threats and taking steps to protect yourself, such as using strong passwords, keeping software up to date, and being cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments. With the future roadmap for cybersecurity products and developments looking promising, Bendigo is well-placed to play a leading role in shaping the future of digital safety, and locals can expect to see a range of new initiatives and innovations emerging in the coming months and years.
