Bendigo Junior Classic Delivers Record Turnout Ahead of Winter Youth Season

The Bendigo Basketball Association hosted its record-breaking junior classic tournament during the Australia Day long weekend, featuring 355 teams and attracting approximately 15,000 people to Bendigo, with local teams winning finals in under-14 boys, under-16 boys, and under-16 girls categories.

Bendigo is recognized as an Australian basketball powerhouse, with the Bendigo Basketball Association established in 1947 and producing international players including Rhonda Vise, Kristi Harrower, and Glen Saville. The success of the January event now provides a benchmark as clubs prepare for the winter season across multiple youth codes.

Programs Expand Participation

Bendigo Strathdale Netball Association is one of Victoria’s largest junior netball competitions, while Little Athletics Bendigo serves girls and boys aged 5-15 with Saturday morning competitions and occasional Friday night events. Bendigo’s Junior Sports Participation Program (Glow Up Central Goldfields) has engaged hundreds of Karen and Afghan former refugees in sports like soccer, volleyball, cane ball, golf, and basketball since 2019, involving 1,323 total participants and 45 volunteers.

The Local Sporting Champions grants awarded in October 2025 supported Bendigo’s young athletes in swimming, canoeing, soccer, volleyball, and wheelchair sports, with recipients receiving grants ranging from $950 to fund travel, equipment, and uniforms. These initiatives sit alongside the basketball tournament’s scale and reinforce the city’s depth in junior sport.
