Bendigo City striker Tom Reilly scored twice in a 3-1 win over Castlemaine on Saturday night, putting the 22-year-old on the front page of local sports coverage.

The result arrived hours after Argentina advanced in the World Cup on the back of Julián Álvarez’s extra-time strike, giving Reilly’s performance extra resonance for fans tracking overseas matches.

Pathway paying off at two Bendigo venues

Reilly came through the under-18 program run at the Tom Flood Sports Centre on View Street before moving into senior training at the club’s facility beside the Bendigo Railway Station on Railway Place. Both sites now host extra sessions each Tuesday and Thursday as the club prepares for the July 19 clash against Shepparton.

Club records show 47 players have progressed from the View Street academy into the first team since 2022, with Reilly the latest to reach double figures in goals for the season.

Numbers behind the surge

Saturday’s crowd of 2,150 paid the $18 adult entry price at the gate, the highest mid-season figure at Tom Flood since 2024. Reilly’s brace took his tally to 11 goals in 14 appearances, one more than the previous club record at this stage of a campaign set in 2019.

Bendigo City sits three points clear at the top of the division with six rounds remaining.

Supporters can buy advance tickets for the Shepparton match online or at the Railway Place office from Monday morning, with gates opening at 6:30 pm on July 19.
