New pedestrian signals activate at McCrae and Mundy streets intersection
Works finished this year bring new lights and layout changes to improve access for walkers and riders in central Bendigo.

New pedestrian operated signals are now active at the intersection of McCrae Street and Mundy Street in Bendigo after recent construction work wrapped up.
The change gives people on foot and on bikes a clearer and safer way to cross in a busy stretch of the city centre. Drivers face a new right turn restriction from Mundy Street onto McCrae Street while left turns remain allowed, a step aimed at cutting crash risks at the spot.
Completed changes at McCrae and Mundy
Work included fresh traffic lights on the north side of McCrae Street, resurfacing of the road and footpath, new signs and line marking. The bus stop at the corner has reopened after an upgrade. One on-street parking space behind the bus stop was removed to make room for the signals. Access from McCrae Street into Mundy Street stays closed for now while the City of Greater Bendigo continues building a shared user path that will connect the Bendigo Creek Trail and the Back Creek Trail.
These lights join an earlier set of pedestrian operated signals installed at Chapel Street and Hargreaves Street, where raised platforms slow vehicles and new kerbing stops right turns out of Hargreaves Street onto Chapel Street. Two parking spaces on the north side of Hargreaves Street were removed and the remaining angle spaces converted to three parallel parks. One further space in front of the Fire Rescue Victoria building on Hargreaves Street was also taken out. The design at that site was shaped with input from Fire Rescue Victoria to keep emergency access clear.
Next steps for road users
Both intersections form part of the planned City Centre Strategic Cycling Corridor along Mundy Street. Motorists and pedestrians should check the updated layout before travelling through either site, especially during peak times when the new signals and turn bans are in use.
