Early works have begun at the former Bendigo Teachers' College site in Osborne Street, Flora Hill, to deliver approximately 160 new homes, including 56 social and affordable units, with construction expected to start in 2027.
Early works at the Osborne Street location in Flora Hill mark the first physical steps toward new housing supply. The Virginia Hill site, 2.95 hectares in size and 5.5km north-west of Bendigo City Centre, has also been nominated for social and affordable housing, with proposed plans currently under review.
Greater Bendigo City Council is committed to creating 900 houses per year across five growth areas: Marong, Junortoun, Huntly, Maiden Gully, and Kangaroo Flat. This approach focuses on delivering homes in established expansion zones while meeting broader regional needs.
Around 11,000 new dwellings are expected across Maiden Gully, Huntly, Marong-Rural West, and Strathfieldsaye. Marong Township is identified as a future satellite town targeting 8,000 residents by 2030. Viewpoint Estate in Huntly forms part of this effort, with a capacity of over 800 homes that includes parklands, walking trails and open green space; hundreds of homes have already been delivered there.
These commitments from the council outline the scale and location of planned housing without providing specific timelines beyond the stated expectations and targets. Plans for additional sites remain subject to review processes.
Residents seeking updates can monitor council announcements on the listed growth areas and nominated sites for further information on next steps.
