Signals active at McCrae-Mundy and Chapel-Hargreaves intersections in Bendigo

New pedestrian operated signals are running at the McCrae Street and Mundy Street intersection and at the Chapel Street and Hargreaves Street crossing in central Bendigo.

The upgrades were completed in stages, with the McCrae-Mundy set becoming operational in March 2026 and the Chapel-Hargreaves set activated the previous August. Both locations sit on McIvor Highway and form part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s planned City Centre Strategic Cycling Corridor on Mundy Street that connects the Bendigo Creek Trail and the Back Creek Trail.

Parking and access changes

One on-street space was removed on McCrae Street behind the bus stop to accommodate the new signals and road surface work. At the Chapel-Hargreaves site, two spaces on the north side of Hargreaves Street were taken out and the remaining angle parks converted to three parallel spaces, while an additional space was removed directly in front of the Fire Rescue Victoria building. Access from McCrae Street into Mundy Street remains closed during separate shared-user path construction by the City of Greater Bendigo.

Right-turn bans now apply from Mundy Street onto McCrae Street and from Hargreaves Street onto Chapel Street, although left turns remain permitted in both directions. Raised platforms were added on Chapel Street to slow approaching traffic, and new kerbing, line marking and footpath upgrades were installed at both sites. The Chapel-Hargreaves design was reviewed with Fire Rescue Victoria to keep emergency vehicle access intact.

Drivers heading through these intersections should note the revised turn options and the reopened bus stop at McCrae and Mundy. Pedestrians and cyclists can now use the active signals for safer crossings.
