The pattern holds steady because the city sits 150 to 164 kilometres from Melbourne along the Calder Freeway. That drive normally takes 1.8 to 2 hours under normal conditions. Regional workers, students at the La Trobe University campus and patients using Bendigo Health facilities rely on these routes each weekday.

Rail and local bus services

V/Line runs at least hourly trains from Melbourne's Southern Cross Station to Bendigo. Express services take about 90 minutes while regular services take roughly two hours. Holders of V/Line tickets can transfer free onto Christian's Bus Company routes inside the city. The company operates 13 bus routes that cover Greater Bendigo.

These rail and bus arrangements have not changed in published timetables this week. Commuters heading to the Murray River catchment towns or to regional arts events continue to use the same connections.

Air services to Sydney

QantasLink operates daily flights between Bendigo Airport and Sydney Airport. Each flight lasts approximately two hours. The service provides the main direct air link from the city to a capital city other than Melbourne.

Transport planners note that car dominance creates pressure on the Calder Freeway during peak periods. The same data shows limited uptake of the integrated V/Line and Christian's Bus options.
