Bendigo Education Sees Key Funding Boost and New Initiatives This Week

Bendigo’s education sector received a significant injection of funding this week as the Victorian government unveiled a $12.5 million package aimed at upgrading facilities and expanding student support programs across the region. The announcement, made on July 10, focuses on enhancing infrastructure at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus and improving resources for local public schools, including Flora Hill Secondary College and Bendigo Senior Secondary College.

These developments come at a critical time as regional Victoria seeks to bolster its educational offerings to meet growing demand and the evolving needs of students. The population in Bendigo has grown by nearly 8% over the past five years, placing increasing pressure on existing school infrastructure. Local Schools and Universities Benefit

The $12.5 million funding includes $6 million earmarked specifically for La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus on Edwards Road. This investment is set to fund new laboratory spaces, upgraded lecture halls, and expanded student housing options expected to accommodate an additional 150 students by 2028. The remainder of the grant will be distributed among several public schools in Bendigo, with Flora Hill Secondary College receiving $2 million for new science labs and Bendigo Senior Secondary College allocated $1.5 million to improve digital learning infrastructure.

Additionally, the Bendigo Education Partnership, a consortium of local schools and educational institutions, announced a new pilot program focusing on Indigenous cultural heritage education. Data Highlights Strength and Challenges

A 2025 Department of Education report shows that 38% of Bendigo’s secondary students are enrolled in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) subjects, above the statewide average of 34%. However, only 22% of regional students, including those in Bendigo, progress to undergraduate studies, compared to 28% in metropolitan Melbourne. These figures underscore the importance of investment in higher education facilities and outreach programs to improve retention and transition rates.

Furthermore, the per-student capital expenditure in Bendigo public schools remains below the metropolitan average, with approximately $3,200 spent annually on infrastructure upgrades per student, compared to $4,100 in Melbourne schools. La Trobe University also reported that, despite recent growth, its Bendigo campus is operating near full capacity across many faculties, particularly in health sciences and education. The university anticipates a 10% increase in enrolment over the next two years, driven partly by Bendigo Health’s hospital expansion on Pall Mall, which offers more clinical placement opportunities for health students.

New construction is scheduled to begin by early 2027, with anticipated completion in mid-2029.
