The increase comes as schools break for the July holidays and families seek structured yet flexible ways to use the city centre rather than stay indoors. Parents cite rising fuel costs and a desire for walkable activities as the main drivers behind the shift.

Local spots that work for mixed-age groups

Rosalind Park offers a flat pram route around the lake and free Wednesday morning story sessions run by the Bendigo Library team at the conservatory entrance. Two blocks away on View Street, the Bendigo Family Centre runs a drop-in play space every weekday from 9 am to 11 am with supervised craft tables and a small indoor climbing frame. Both locations sit within easy walking distance of Hargreaves Street cafés that stock high chairs and offer discounted kids meals until 2 pm.

Staff at the Family Centre report that 68 families used the space on the first Monday of the holidays, up from 41 the same week in 2025.
