Emerging talent voices and the next wave to watch

Bendigo's Capital Theatre on View Street has announced a new season of short works by five local playwrights under 30, with rehearsals already underway for shows opening August 5.

The push comes as regional arts groups seek to rebuild audiences after the 2025 winter cancellations, when several touring companies pulled out of central Victoria dates. Local producers say the focus on homegrown voices keeps ticket costs down and fills seats with nearby residents who want stories set in the area rather than imported scripts.

Venues and programs driving the shift

The Bendigo Regional Arts Centre on Hargreaves Mall runs the Emerging Voices Lab, which pairs the new playwrights with directors from the Capital Theatre roster. Participants meet twice weekly in the centre's upstairs studio and have access to the main stage for two full run-throughs before opening night. A second group works out of the View Street rehearsal rooms, where lighting and sound crews from the theatre provide technical support without charging the usual hire fees.

Organisers report 120 applications for the 2026 lab, up from 85 the previous year. Tickets for the August previews sell for $18, with full-season passes at $95 covering four separate bills through October.
