Bendigo's emerging talent voices signal the next wave to watch

Bendigo artists under 30 have secured 12 commissions from state bodies this year for work displayed at the Bendigo Art Gallery on View Street.

The shift follows a 2025 increase in regional arts funding that prioritised first-time exhibitors over established names. Local venues report stronger walk-up crowds for shows that mix film, spoken word and installation pieces drawn from Bendigo's mining history and surrounding farmland.

Venues anchoring the push

Ulumbarra Theatre on Williamson Street has scheduled three emerging-voice nights in August, while the weekly markets at Hargreaves Mall now include a dedicated stall for zines and short-run prints by new writers. Both sites sit within a short walk of Rosalind Park, allowing audiences to move between readings and open-air screenings without extra travel.

Figures released by Creative Victoria last month showed Bendigo registrations for its emerging-artist database rose from 87 in 2024 to 214 in 2025. Entry to the Ulumbarra events costs $18, with concessions at $12, and advance bookings open on 15 July.

Interested residents can register interest through the Bendigo Art Gallery website before 1 August to receive updates on open studio visits in the Golden Square neighbourhood. Those wanting to submit work should prepare a one-page proposal for the next round of mall stalls, which closes on 22 July.
