AI infrastructure push reshaping Bendigo job and talent market

Bendigo employers posted 620 technology and infrastructure positions in the second quarter of 2026, a 38 percent rise from the same period last year, according to figures compiled by the Bendigo Regional Development Board.

The increase tracks directly with national plans to build larger data centres that require constant power, cooling and fibre connections. Local firms now compete with Melbourne operators for engineers, network technicians and project managers who understand both legacy systems and new AI workloads.

Projects anchored to specific sites

Work has begun on a 12-megawatt extension beside the existing data facility on Lansell Street in East Bendigo, while the Bendigo Tech Collective is fitting out a second training floor above the old Myer building on Hargreaves Mall. Both sites have advertised for certified fibre splicers and HVAC specialists with experience in liquid-cooling loops. The Lansell Street contractor, local firm Central Victorian Networks, set aside 15 apprenticeships that start in August.

These locations sit within established commercial corridors rather than greenfield estates, which means workers can reach them by bus from Strathfieldsaye or via the new bike path along the Bendigo Creek.

Pay and skills evidence

A June 2026 survey by the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce recorded average salaries for mid-level network engineers at $118,000, up from $102,000 twelve months earlier. The same report showed 47 percent of local vacancies now list an AI-related certification or equivalent experience as essential. Training provider Bendigo TAFE reported its cloud-computing diploma filled within three days of enrolment opening on 1 July.

Employers say the talent shortage is most acute for roles that combine traditional electrical trades with data-centre safety protocols. Several businesses have begun offering relocation packages of up to $8,000 for candidates willing to move from regional New South Wales or South Australia.
