Bendigo Weather Today
Bendigo has a warm semi-arid to temperate climate quite different from Melbourne's. Located in the Loddon Mallee region of northern Victoria at approximately 225 metres elevation, Bendigo is drier and hotter in summer than Melbourne, but also experiences cold winters with frost. The city's position north of the Great Dividing Range means it misses much of the rainfall that the ranges capture from southerly weather systems.
Bendigo Climate — What to Expect Each Season
- Summer (December to February) — Hot and dry. Bendigo regularly exceeds 35°C in summer and heatwaves above 40°C occur most years. January average maximum: 28.4°C. Afternoon northerlies from the semi-arid interior are the primary driver of heatwave conditions. Thunderstorms provide welcome relief but can bring damaging hail.
- Autumn (March to May) — The most pleasant season. Temperatures moderate through April and May. Bendigo's heritage goldfields architecture and gardens are best appreciated in settled autumn weather.
- Winter (June to August) — Cold. Average July minimum: 4.5°C with frosts common across the Bendigo region. Colder than Melbourne due to the inland continental influence but less frequently cloudy. Average July maximum: 12.7°C.
- Spring (September to October) — Variable with late frosts possible in September. Temperatures warm quickly through October with increasing bushfire risk as vegetation dries.
Bendigo Rainfall
Bendigo receives approximately 550mm of rainfall per year — among the lower readings for a Victorian city. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed with a slight winter peak.
